The Regional School Unit 16 board voted unanimously Monday to hire Jessica Madsen to lead the school. Madsen has been with the school system for 11 years. She is now the dean of students at Bruce M. Whittier Middle School in Poland.

“She’s got long-term commitment to the district, which was a big priority for the Elm Street staff and parents because they’ve had quite a bit of turnover in that position,” Superintendent Tina Meserve said.

Madsen succeeds Catherine Folan, who has been interim principal since Ryan Patrie left in October. Patrie, who led Elm Street for three years, left to become principal of Turner Primary School.

Elm Street serves almost 300 students in pre-k through sixth grade.

Meserve said Madsen’s background in special education will be an asset to the school since the district’s behavior program is also there.

Madsen is scheduled to start as principal July 1.
