LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine has announced upcoming swim class sessions, include the YWCA Tiger Sharks Swim Team try-outs.

YWCA Tiger Sharks Swim Team: for ages 6 to 18, is a member of USA swimming and Maine swimming. Members will learn the basic fundamentals of competitive strokes and being part of a team in a positive and encouraging environment.

Coaches will focus on stroke development, increasing endurance, nutrition and dry land conditioning. In order to build team spirit, all members will practice at the same time. To enhance learning and promote safety, swimmers will be placed in lanes with others of the same ability and speed. There will be five practices a week.

To join, youth must be able to swim two continuous laps (50 yards), one length freestyle and one length backstroke, without stopping. The team will participate in one USA swim meet. The cost is $150 plus USA membership and the child must be a member of the YWCA. The program will run from May 14 to Aug. 10.

Aqua Kickboxing: 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays; instructor, Danielle Nemeth. Classes combine aqua movement, music and the fundamentals of kickboxing for a whole body workout. The water aerobics cardio class is a “no contact” class that will help burn calories and tone. No experience is necessary.

YWCA American Red Cross Aquatic Training: Lifeguard training/lifeguard review, blended learning. The new format allows participants age 15 and older to become a certified lifeguard. Participants will spend seven to eight hours working at their own pace online, then go in and demonstrate skills learned for prevention of injuries and rescue of swimmers, including providing the emergency skills of first aid and CPR/AED. Prerequisites include completion of a 300-yard swim, treading water and timed deep water object removal. Certificate is valid for two years. Students must have their own email address.

Session II will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays, May 6 and 20, and 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 12. Session III will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 20 to 22. Must register by June 10. Cost for members is $150; nonmembers, $175.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 25 to 27. Teaches currently certified American Red Cross Lifeguards 17 years of age and older how to teach the lifeguard training course, including CPR/AED for professional rescuers and health care providers/first aid. Must pass skills review and written tests on the first day of class. Online learning required before the first day of class. Must register by June 3 with American Red Cross and pay additional fee of $35.Students must have their own email address. Cost: Members, $225; nonmembers $250.

Water Safety Instructor: Teaches students age 16 and older to teach the ARC program of swim instruction and basic water rescue. Proficiency in front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, side stroke, elementary backstroke and butterfly to American Red Cross Level IV standards is required. Must complete online ARC module at least a week prior to first day of class and pay additional fee of $35. Module link information will be given upon registration. Students must have their own email address.

Session I: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4 to 6; Session II: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 11 to 13. Cost: Members, $375; nonmembers, $400.

Basic Water Rescue: 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 10. Teaches participants non-swimming rescue skills necessary for childcare providers with pools less than four feet deep and less than 16 feet wide where a non-swimming rescue is practical. This is also a class for parents and grandparents with pools or other open water. Cost: $70, Members, $70; nonmembers, $80,

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Water Front Module: 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 24. Must have current American Red Cross lifeguard certificate. The course will provide additional open water skills useful to those working at beaches or youth camps. Cost: Members, $75; nonmembers, $85.

Junior Lifeguarding: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25. The course is designed to develop swimming skills and lead youth ages 11 to 14 to build knowledge, attitudes and skills leading to successful completion of lifeguarding at age 15 or greater. Must be able to swim 25-yard front crawl and breast stroke with proper breathing. Jump into deep water, tread water for a minute and exit the water without using steps/ladder. Cost: Members, $75; nonmembers, $85.
