DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Lewiston Elks Lodge #371 is still in need of donations for the spaghetti supper on May 12 to benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer fundraiser. We’re asking people to donate sauce, meatballs, bread and desserts. We would like to make this a great event to help our Maine children in need. Supper starts at 5 p.m. with dancing with music provided by the band Tattooed Lies to begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available for $15 and $18. DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Paris Hill Music Festival was a great success in 2017 because of the wonderful volunteers who helped coordinate the event. The second annual festival is being planned for Aug. 9-11. Volunteers are needed for every area. ANSWER: On Feb. 24, there was a very comprehensive and informative article in the Sun Journal about this major music festival that was a huge success last year. Tickets go on sale June 1 and are expected to sell out.

Musician Howie Day, Christian artist Nichole Nordeman, and the musical tribute group Let’s Hang On! will perform. The festival will include a full day of free music for the community. From 10 a.m. to noon, there will be musical activities and concerts for the children. From noon to 5 p.m., there will be five local groups and individuals performing free in a fundraising activity for the festival.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Since the new bus terminal has been set up at the Great Falls Plaza, I was wondering what is happening to the carnival that comes every spring. Now that there is a travel lane blocked for the buses, it does not seem like the carnival could come back here.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: We have a brick planter connected to our steps. This spring a yellow substance is on the bricks. I would like to find out what would be appropriate to use to clean the bricks. Thank you.

ANSWER: First use a brush with stiff bristles — the yellow substance could be a type of mold, mildew or vegetative growth. Next, wet down the bricks thoroughly with plain water then mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Saturate the bricks with this solution and leave it on the bricks for several minutes then use a brush or sponge to scrub off the residue. Give it a good rinse.

At the hardware store, you will find cleaners that are specially made for brick surfaces but try the vinegar and water first. You’ll save some money and it’s better for the environment, too.
