FARMINGTON — A part-time corrections officer was subdued with pepper spray Wednesday as Franklin County sheriff’s deputies were attempting to arrest him on a charge of drunken driving.

Thomas Plog, 65, of Avon was arrested on misdemeanor charges of operating under the influence and refusing to submit to arrest or detention after crashing his car, according to Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr.

Deputy Keith Madore and Chief Deputy Steven Lowell responded to the report of a single-vehicle crash at 5:13 p.m. at the intersection of Avon Valley and Bailey roads in Avon.

When Madore asked the driver for information, “he became belligerent and (repeatedly) attempted to assault Madore,” according to Nichols. 

Plog, who retired as a full-time corrections officer at the Franklin County Detention Center several years ago, was still on the roster as a part-time officer.

Plog has been removed from the roster as a result of this incident, Nichols said.

He had worked as recently as the last pay period, according to a county clerk.

Former Sheriff Dennis Pike recognized Plog, who held the rank of sergeant when he was working full time, as Corrections Officer of the Year in 2010. 

Plog was released Wednesday night from the jail on $3,000 bail.

A conviction on OUI and refusing to submit to arrest charges carries a maximum 364 days in jail and $2,000 fine.

Plog could not be reached for comment Thursday.
