CANTON — Mrs. Marjorie Carman (Durost) Gammon, 89, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, was promoted to heaven, Tuesday, April 24, at the Pinnacle Health and Rehab in Canton. She was a resident of Peru.
Born in Mansfield, Mass., June 14, 1928, she was the daughter of Rev. Morley and Alice (Leonard) Durost. Marjorie was a graduate of Mexico High School with the Class of 1945 and Farmington State Teachers College in 1949, with a degree in home economics.
She worked as a home economics teacher in Mexico and Unionville, Conn., until she became a full-time pastor’s wife and mother. She was also a part-time elementary school teacher in Warren. As a pastor’s wife, alongside her husband, she loved and faithfully served congregations in Lee then Warren, then in Fair Haven and Hydeville, Vt., and then South Berwick, Portland and Rumford.
She was a member of the Rumford First Baptist Church and long-served with the Mission Circle of the church. For many years, she and her husband wintered in Brunswick, Ga., where they were active in the Northside Baptist Church. She led women’s Bible studies, taught Sunday School, participated in Mission Circles and enjoyed cooking, canning and sewing. She had an active letter-and-card writing ministry, bringing encouragement to so many. She especially loved spending time with her family and grandchildren, for whom she continually prayed.
Marjorie was married in Lisbon Falls on June 28, 1952, to Rev. Glendon Gammon, who died in Canton, Aug. 9, 2017.
Survivors include two sons, Rev. Stephen Gammon and his wife, Helen, of Coventry, R.I., and Dr. Gary Gammon and his wife, Jennifer, of Pinehurst, N.C.; three daughters, Cheryl Tyler and husband, Michael, of Brunswick, Ga., Marcia Eyster and husband, Philip, of Sangerville, and Marilee Colpitts and husband, Rick, of Peru; 26 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Durost and wife, Sally, of Augusta, and Robert Durost and wife, Gail, of Kittery; three sisters, Barbara Farina of Phillips, Margaret George of Peru and Audrey Sweet of Phillips.
She was predeceased by her husband; a son, Dr. David Gammon; a granddaughter, Sarah Colpitts; and two brothers, Donald and David Durost.
