AUBURN — The rain came down in buckets when Edward Little hosted Bangor for a boys’ lacrosse matchup Wednesday. Thankfully for the Red Eddies, this wasn’t their first time in the rain.

“We had a preseason game in the rain under the lights, and I think that helped us a little bit,” Edward Little coach Jim Dock said. “It’s spring lacrosse in Maine, it is what it is, and you have to deal with it. I am just glad we got the game in today.”

Edward Little scored early and often, through the wind and rain, to defeat the Rams 15-7.

The Eddies scored quickly in the first period, with goals from Tyler Morin, Ben Feldman and Alex Landry within the first six minutes.

After a Bangor timeout, Edward Little’s Eli Thibodeau got the ball on the left side of the offensive zone. Thibodeau cut to the middle, used a screen from Spencer Frahn then made a spin move off a defender and ripped a goal in the bottom corner of the net.

It was just that kind of afternoon for Edward Little.

“We moved the ball well at times,” Dock said. “We have some really good shooters, and our clears looked good as the game progressed.”

Thibodeau scored again before Bangor’s Jacob Henry got the Rams on the board after coming from behind the net to score on Eddies goalie Gunnar Winslow.

“We had a couple scouts on Bangor, and we knew No. 14 (Nason Vassisiev) and No. 7 (Henry) were going to be the most skilled players,” Dock said. “Once we took our eyes off them for a second, they jumped out and bit us.”

In the second quarter, Edward Little picked back up where they left off in the first. Frahn scored back-to-back two goals, the second coming off a saved Thibodeau shot that ricocheted to Frahn’s stick in front of goal.

Morin scored the next goal and had an assist on the following score, and at the half it was 10-2 in favor of the Red Eddies. While Edward Little scored often, its defense was the talking point for the team after the game.

“We knew they had some good offensive players, and we didn’t know much about their defense,” Morin said. “Our defense did a good job of shutting down their players and then we got some open shots.”

Leighton Girardin scored a hat trick in the third quarter for Edward Little, which held off four third-quarter goals from the Rams. After the third, Edward Little settled in and controlled the game until the end. A big part of that was Winslow, who made 19 saves on the day.

“They were clearing a lot, more than they should have, so we adjusted to that,” Winslow said. “Our defense went man-on-man more and got tighter. I think I played good, made a lot of saves, and defense played great.”

Frahn finished off a hat trick in the final quarter, and Winslow made three more saves in net, helping EL kill off two penalties.

As for the rain, it didn’t seem to hold back the Eddies.

“When I throw the ball it might affect it a little bit, but it doesn’t affect the game, honestly,” Winslow said.

“The rain affects the stick, but it didn’t seem to affect today,” Morin said.

Edward Little moves to 2-0 on the season, while Bangor is now 1-2.
