HARTFORD, Connecticut — Bates College came back in Game 1 of its doubleheader to defeat Trinity 5-3 in seven innings, and continued the momentum in Game 2 with a 4-3 victory.
In the first contest, the Bobcats scored four times in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Jack Arend earned a walk that brought home Pat Beaton. Zach Avila belted a single that drove home Jon Lindgren and Rob Matson. Arend scored on a passed ball to cap the inning.
Avila had three hits on the afternoon.
Nolan Collins pitched six innings for the Bobcats, striking out five and allowing three runs. Jake Shapiro picked up his fourth save of the season when he put the Bantams down in the bottom of the seventh, striking out two.
Trinity’s Alex Rodriguez had two RBIs.
The Bobcats did most of their damage in the second game in the top of the first when Dan Trulli hit a three-run home run.
The Bantams chipped away at the Bates lead in the bottom of the second when Rodriguez recorded his second sac fly of the day and Tyler Forgione also had a sac fly. Geoffrey Stillman, who came in the game as a pinch runner, scored in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch.
With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Avila worked a walk and Kyle Carter scored the winning run for the Bobcats.
Shapiro earned his second save of the day with a scoreless ninth. Starter Justin Foley went five innings, allowing two runs in the win.
