There’s a chance to dance for the soldier, Friday night at Lewiston City Hall. The Calumet Club with 23 of its members in the service, has arranged for a benefit dance, the proceeds of which will go toward a tobacco fund for the men with the colors. The club keeps the names of the men posted on its bulletin board, and a service flag from a front window again keeps the names fresh in the memories of those at home. There are officers and privates, but on the rolls of the club and in the memory of the club, the boys are Just plain Calumet members, from the major who holds the highest title of the Calumet servicemen to the latest private who has gone.

Working in rainy and somewhat windy conditions last week, Auburn crews started removing some of the 20,000 cubic yards of sand dumped on city streets this winter. Backhoes and bucket loaders, street sweepers and the city’s Vac-All have been out and will continue until the end of May, said Public Works Director Robert Belz, “It’s a monumental task,” Belz said, explaining that about 30 percent of the sand is usually recovered. It is then used as cover material at the building demolition landfill or as fill.
