KENTS HILL — Edward Little’s offense rolled in with the dense fog that kept closing in on the lacrosse field at Kents Hill School.

But the Red Eddies took the chill out of a cold and misty Tuesday morning with a slow-and-steady comeback to disappear into the brume with a 15-9 KVAC boys’ lacrosse victory over a relentless Mt. Blue team.

“The first quarter was difficult, but we are down seven starters with vacation week,” EL lacrosse coach Jim Dock said. “So we have some subs playing up into position.

“You know pregame jitters, fog, field conditions kind of played into it a little bit, but once we were able to calm down — that saying that calm is contagious, composure is contagious, and so is confusion, unfortunately — (but) once we able to get the calm going and have some confidence, we able to play our game.

“I am happy after turning it around after a slow start. Got our composure back and moved forward. It is a nice win to start the season with.”

The Cougars opened up on the Eddies in the first few minutes of the game and took a 3-2 lead thanks to two of Reed Wells’ five goals and a point from teammate Eli Yeaton. Evan Stone, Brody Looney, and Matt Hyde each scored for the rough-and-tumble Cougars.

“We played well,” Mt. Blue coach Kevin Averill said. “There was a lot of effort, intensity. Kids weren’t afraid to shoot. That was good.

“The second half, we got penalties … and at the end of the second quarter we lost momentum going into halftime with a couple of penalties.

“They killed us on a man down. They moved it quick.”

Like Dock’s Eddies, Averill was missing key players this vacation week, but he still liked what he saw in his Cougars.

“Reed Wells played phenomenal,” Averill said. “I don’t know how many goals he scored. Eli (Yeaton), we switched him, played well.

“I thought midfielder wise, Cam Foss was awesome. He is becoming a clearing machine. I thought Connor Damon stepped in and played defense as well as Jack Sullivan stepped in and played defense. He is a freshman.

“A lot guys stepped up. We can keep going on. Matt Hyde, he played awesome.”

The Red Eddies got their act together in a hurry and erupted with five goals in the second and third quarters.

By halftime, EL was holding slim 7-6 lead, but the Eddies were just getting started on offense. Eli Thibodeau scored back-to-back goals and Alex Landry scored his second of four goals in the second quarter. He added two more in the third.

EL’s Ben Feldman and Spencer Frahn each turned in hat tricks and Cam Sturgis added a goal to bolster the Red Eddies’ lead. Dakota Bosquet scored a pair of goals, too.

“Spencer Frahn, senior midfielder, is just a fantastic guy to have on your team,” Dock said. “Scores us timely goals.

“Alex Landry played very well today. He was unselfish. He gave his body and did the grinding necessary to move the ball and create some scoring opportunities.”
