LEWISTON — The City of Lewiston is announcing that members are being sought for the 2018-2019 Lewiston Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) year of service, which will run from July 2018-July 2019.
New this year – applications can now be submitted online at www.lewistonmaine.gov/youthapply. The deadline for application submission is Wednesday, May 16. Hard copies are available at the Lewiston City Administrator’s Office, 27 Pine St.
To be considered for membership on the LYAC, the applicant must be a grades nine to 12 student at either Lewiston High School or St. Dominic Academy (or will be in the fall) or a Lewiston resident at the time of application. Lewiston home-school students are also welcome to apply for membership. Current members may also reapply.
The council was first established by the Lewiston City Council in October of 2001 and has since received local, state and national recognition. The LYAC enables youth to work toward goals to empower youth community-wide, as well as undertake service projects that enhance the community. The youth council also serves as a liaison between the youth of the community and the city. The current group is surveying 12th, eighth and fourth grade students for their perspectives on Lewiston and the city’s role in their future.
Projects that LYAC has been touted for include recent city image builders titled “What Do You Know About Lewiston?” and a “Lewiston Success Stories” forum, among many others.
When applications are received, a selection committee will review them, conduct interviews and appoint up to 15 youth. The committee will make its selection by the last Friday in June, and selected youth will be subsequently notified and officially appointed during a July Lewiston City Council meeting.
