AUBURN — A Bridgton man is being held without bail after a high-speed chase late Monday night in a U-Haul pickup truck stolen in Auburn, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a news release.

George R. Sproul Jr., 25, was arrested in Standish on charges of eluding police, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, driving to endanger and criminal speed, according to the release.

He remained in the Cumberland County Jail in Portland on Tuesday night and is scheduled to be arraigned in a Portland court Wednesday afternoon, a jail officer said.

The 2017 Dodge Ram truck had been rented from U-Haul Moving & Storage of Twin City, 541 Center St., but hadn’t been returned and was reported stolen. It was later spray-painted black to disguise it, the release said.

Bridgton police tried to stop it on Route 107, but the chase was discontinued because of the high speed.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s deputies saw the truck on Route 107 in Sebago and took up the chase. Spike mats were placed near Boundary Road and Route 113 and when the truck sped through the intersection, the mats flattened three of its tires. Sproul pulled over and surrendered to deputies, according to the Sheriff’s Office statement.
