AVON — A local woman and a Phillips man were injured Thursday morning when their vehicles collided head-on on Route 4.

Jonathan Cummings, 41, of Phillips told state police he was driving north when he reached for a package of cigarettes in the passenger seat and his SUV crossed the centerline, Trooper Andrew Hardy said.

Corrie Ann Osgood, 44, of Avon, driving a pickup truck south, tried to avoid a collision  by swerving into the opposite lane to go around the SUV, but he swerved back into his lane and the vehicles collided, Hardy said. 

Cummings’ Subaru Outback went down an embankment into the front yard of a residence.

Hardy said he issued Cummings a summons on a charge of failure to maintain his vehicle in the proper travel lane.

Both drivers suffered injuries not considered life-threatening and were taken in NorthStar EMS ambulances to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, he said.

Cummings’ SUV and Osgood’s Chevrolet Avalanche were heavily damaged and were towed from the scene.

Route 4 was closed until debris could be removed from the road. 

The accident was reported at 11:16 a.m.
