MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Academy Academic Decathlon Team, coached by Cathy and Scott Foyt, won the Maine Academic Decathlon State Championship on March 3 at Scarborough High School.
The top five schools were the following: first, Monmouth Academy; second, Scarborough High School; third, Bangor High School; fourth, Hall-Dale High School; and fifth, Calais High School.
Academic Decathlon is comprised of A, B and C students who study together as a team for a year, then compete in 10 (decathlon) categories: Art, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language/Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science and Speech. The theme changes every year. This year’s theme is Africa, and next year it will be the 1960s.
The team will travel to the National Championship in Frisco, Texas, in April. The following students participated and won the following medals: Alternate team members: Jocelyn Coffin, Taylor Whalen, Grace Vierling, Joe Crocker, Delaney Houston, Chloe Dwinal, Alicen Burnham, Cammie Houston, Hayden Luce, bronze, music; Jessica Clavet, bronze, art; Kyle Gunnells, bronze, music; and Evan Hasenfus, silver, essay, and bronze, economics.
Competition team members: Kaitlin Hunt, Natalie Grandahl, gold, language/literature and silver, interview; Ed Zuis, silver, speech and bronze, math and art; Chris Dumont, silver, music, essay and language/literature, and bronze, social science; Rhayna Poulin, silver, language/literature and science, and bronze, essay, art, and social science; Amber Currie, silver, speech, music and essay, and bronze, interview, art and language/literature; Bryce Boulet, gold, speech; silver, art, social science and language/literature, and bronze ,science, essay, economics and music; Dylan Goff, gold, interview and economics; silver, language/literature, and bronze, science; and Jaryd Bates, gold, essay, economics, art, social science, music, language/literature, and silver, science and math.
Highest team scorer: Dylan Goff; third highest varsity scorer in Maine, Amber Currie; second highest varsity scorer in Maine, Bryce Boulet; second highest honors scorer and second highest all divisions scorer in Maine, Dylan Goff; and highest varsity scorer in Maine, Jaryd Bates.
