DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Marine Corps League, Detachment 810, will celebrate National Vietnam War Veterans Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 29 at Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street in Lewiston.

The event is open to everyone, especially veterans who served in Vietnam or were on active duty during that era, Oct. 1, 1955, to April 28, 1975. Spouses, family members and the public who wish to thank these veterans for their service to their country are invited to attend.

If you know of any Vietnam veterans, especially those who are struggling, it would be a great gift to pay for an inscription on our next Memorial Monument No. 30 to honor them. The only condition is that they have an honorable discharge. Proof of service, such as a copy of their DD214 or Honorable Discharge is also needed.

Monument No. 30 is filling up fast, and we would encourage anyone who wants to have a veteran’s name inscribed on it to send in their application as soon as possible with the $35 fee.

All other veterans who served in any branch of service in peacetime or wartime, deceased or living, active duty or retired, and were Maine residents or lived in Maine then retired to another state, are eligible to have their names inscribed on our monuments.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: You passed along information about fine art and antique appraisers in your column and listed Bruce Buxton. Unfortunately, Mr. Buxton passed away last year. I once had a painting appraised by him at a Lovell Historical Society fundraiser. Although he said my painting was in good condition, it needed cleaning so he recommended The Maine Project for Fine Art Conservation-Project MEAC (ME Art Conservation) and said they did excellent restoration work. You may want to add this to the Rolodex.

This recommendation of Project MEAC, the only nonprofit Fine Art Conservation lab-studio in the state of Maine is a valuable one for the Rolodex. They preserve art from museums and historical societies in Maine and New England and also conserve artwork belonging to families and individuals. It’s at 142 High St. in Portland.
