WATERFORD — Residents will vote on a $1.85 million budget at their annual town meeting Saturday.
It begins at 9 a.m. at the Waterford Municipal Building on Valley Road.
The budget is $344,964, or 8.1 percent, more than last year. Most of the increase comes in the paving budget: $616,778 for 2018 compared to $316,778 in 2017. That’s because $196,778 of that increase was raised last year for improvements to Mill Hill Road, but wasn’t spent a significant rainstorm washed away part of Blackguard Road and officials were not sure how much that repair would cost. The $196,778 was rolled over to the 2018 budget, according to the town report.
In addition to the original Mill Hill Road improvements, $290,000 of the paving budget will go toward an additional 7,300 feet of that road.
The proposed budget also showed a $21,604 increase for the Transfer Station because residents made more trips to the station.
The final article on the warrant asks residents whether they want a consumer fireworks ordinance. The purpose of the law is to “reduce fire danger, limit detrimental effects of firework noise that can cause harm to humans and animals and mitigate adverse environmental impacts.”
The ordinance would allow using fireworks until 10 p.m. July 4, and the Saturday before and the Saturday after that holiday. All other days would require a fireworks permit.
The ordinance would prohibit fireworks when the fire danger is at level 3 or higher.
