AUGUSTA — Virginia Louise Sawtelle, age 95, a resident of Winthrop, passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, at Gray Birch Nursing Home in Augusta. She was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Jay, the daughter of Harold J. and Dorothy E. (Williams) Farrington. She attended Jay and Wilton schools.
On Feb. 6, 1947, in Jay, she married Leopaul L. Sawtelle; he passed away Nov. 29, 2007. Virginia had been employed at Bass Shoe factory and Carleton Woolen Mill, retiring in 1979. She enjoyed doing crafts of all kinds: quilting, knitting and crocheting. She was also a member of the Alliance Church of Winthrop where she taught Sunday School.
She is survived by her three daughters, Constance Bryant, of Lewiston, Carolyn Bontkes, of Porto Velho, Brazil, and Cathy Lippert and her husband, Robert, of Augusta; two sons, Brent Averill and his wife, Diane, of Stratham, N.H., Peter Sawtelle of Belgrade; her siblings, Barbara Farrington, Glenda Farrington and Sharon Farrington, all of Bean’s Corner in Jay, and Wayne Farrington and his wife, Bobbie, of Gray, and her sisters-in-law, Judy Farrington of Jay and Dorothy Sawtelle of Auburn. She had nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her friend and caregiver, Cynthia Brown, of Winthrop.
Virginia was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Dorothy Farrington; her husband, Leopaul Sawtelle; sisters, Norma Tenney and Frances Billingsley; and brothers, Kenneth and Maynard Farrington; son-in-law, Willem Bontkes; stepson, Robert Sawtelle, and his wife, Claire; and granddaughter, Paige Sawtelle.
