Gold ball history: In a way, both teams are defending a Class C state championship. Monmouth won the title last year, the first basketball championship in school history. Houlton won the 2015 title, but didn’t get to defend it because it was bumped up to Class B,where it won the 2016 state championship, and lost in the 2017 title game to Gray-New Gloucester. The Shiretowners are in their fourth consecutive state championship game — one short of the school record of five straight from 1982-86. Houlton has been in 11 state championship games and has won six. Monmouth is playing in its sixth state title game.
