AUBURN — Lewis Stanislaus Murphy, 91, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 21, at Clover Manor in Auburn, after a brief illness.

Lewis was born on Jan. 14, 1927, in Waldorf, Md., the son of Louis M. and Lucy Langley Murphy. He left school after the 10th grade to make his way in the world, joining the Navy where he served for four years. He married Elsie Alberta Wheeler on Oct. 28, 1960, and they resided in Marbury, Md., for over 30 years.

Lewis spent his career at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C., as a model maker (machinist), retiring in 1982. His skill and attention to detail led him to work on early satellite and radar systems.

In retirement he founded LewisCrafts where he used those same talents to make wind chimes and handcrafted pens that he and Alberta sold at craft gairs. In 1995 Lewis and Alberta moved to Maine to live with their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Alberta, of Auburn; daughter, Mary Ann Emmert, and son-in-law, Rick Emmert; grandchildren, Anthony and Corey Emmert; and great-grandchildren, Ryleigh, Savana, Julian and Kai Emmert.

He was predeceased by his parents along with his sisters, Julia (Grover) Branham and Theresa (Warren) Adams.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Clare Place at Clover Manor for the excellent care they provided during his stay there.
