LEWISTON — Ron Dumont did not like the start his team got off to Friday night against Greely/Gray-New Gloucester.

The response his team showed, however, was more like what he wanted to see.

Lewiston/Monmouth/Oak Hill gave up a goal less than 30 seconds in, but came back with three quick ones in just over four minutes, and three more in the second period of a 6-1 girls’ hockey victory at Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

Lauren Gervais found Bridget Roberts wide open to the right of the goal, and Roberts didn’t miss on her shot past Blue Devils goalie Camree St. Hilaire 27 seconds into the game for a 1-0 Rangers lead.

“That’s obviously not they way we wanted to start,” Dumont said. “And we also knew that they had some key players out, and we talked about that. You got to come out with the same intensity as if those girls were playing.

“I told the next line going out, I said, ‘Look, this is early.'”

The Rangers (13-2) gave away their early momentum with a penalty 61 seconds in. The Blue Devils (14-2) took advantage 18 seconds later. Brie Dube scored unassisted to tie the game up 1-1.

Sara Robert put the Blue Devils up at the two-minute mark, taking a feed from Jordyn Mynahan just outside the defensive blue line and going the other way with it for a breakaway goal. Robert then fed Grace Dumond for a point shot that made it 3-1 just 4:02 into the game.

“They had a good response,” Dumont said.

The Blue Devils scored quickly again to start the second period. Robert scored from linemates Gemma Landry and Madison Conley 2:12 in, and Dumond scored on another point shot from Veda Leclerc and Robert 25 seconds later.

“We had a little chit-chat (before the second),” Dumont said. “Like I told them, I said, ‘You got to work as a team.'”

Dube rounded out the scoring with five minutes left in the second, getting an assist from Mynahan.

The Rangers, who were right behind the Blue Devils for the top spot in the North region Heal point standings entering the game, were without senior captain Courtney Sullivan.

Rangers goalie Jordyn Owens made 19 saves on 25 shots. St. Hilaire stopped seven of eight.

“We’re not giving up a lot of shots, but when we do they’re kind of quality stuff,” Dumont said. “She’s done a real good job. I think that’s the hardest thing for a goalie. When you’re not seeing a lot of shots, it’s hard to get into the game, and she’s a kid who’s very focused.”
