NORWAY — The newest member of the Norway Police Department has a name: Bolo.
The department handed over the responsibility of naming its black Labrador retriever to students at Guy E. Rowe Elementary School in Norway. They had three choices: Bolo, Maverick and Magnum.
Bolo got 104 votes; Magnum, 88; and Maverick, 76.
BOLO is an acronym for the law enforcement term “be on the lookout.” It informs officers to watch for a person of interest or suspect in an investigation.
Officer John Lewis proposed having the town buy a police dog to track people and sniff out evidence, including drugs. The purebred Labrador retriever wouldn’t be trained to bite, Lewis told selectmen in October. It would live with Lewis.
Selectmen unanimously authorized the purchase in December.
