In Richmond, Greg Barker thought his furnace had exploded.

In Auburn, Judith L. Vardamis reported it sounded like a plow truck.

An earthquake just south of Richmond early Wednesday night rattled Mainers in a variety of places.

The quake measured a magnitude 2.6 by the U.S. Geological Survey just a few minutes before 7 p.m. Within minutes, locals were taking to social media to report shaking, rattling and rolling.

In Lisbon Falls and Topsham, they felt it. Same in Lewiston, same in Auburn, same in scattered towns such as Poland, Naples and Otisfield.

“I thought someone hit the side of the house,” Jacquelyn Marie Kukulski of Litchfield said. “Shook the entire house. Rattled windows. Woke my son up.”

Barker, who was relieved to find that his furnace hadn’t blown, reported feeling a second quake about an hour after the first. It’s not the first time he has experienced a quake, either.

“Actually, we have quite a few here,” Barker said. “Most are not noticeable, but these two tonight shook the house. Not like you see on TV, but like when something explodes.”

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.
