POLAND — Selectpersons approved a request Tuesday evening by the owner of Northern Springs Mobile Home Park to extend town waterlines to the park, where the water supply is dwindling and dangerous.
Orrin Welch said there is an excessive amount of uranium in the park’s water, based on state regulations. He said he uses two uranium filters at a time at a cost of several thousand dollars each every two years.
Welch said the extension would give residents constant access to clean water.
The park is on Poland Corner Road.
The board approved of Welch applying for a Community Development Block Grant to extend the waterline from Poland Corner Road to the park. The grant would cover the entire cost.
The town would be responsible for the annual maintenance cost of two new hydrants.
“It seems to me it would benefit the town to have two new hydrants in the area,” board Chairperson Stan Tetenman said. “We hope you get approval from the state.”
Also at the meeting, Colin Dinsmore, senior civil engineer for HEB Engineers of Bridgton, presented updated plans for the municipal complex renovation the town has been working on for several years. The plans include adding a one-way lane for police and fire vehicles outside their building and moving the handicapped parking spaces.
Cost options presented to the board included one for $808,000 that encompasses a more extensive drainage system, more lights and a construction company doing all the work. The other option for $570,000 has a simpler drainage system, fewer lights and public works employees doing a large amount of construction.
The board asked Dinsmore to come to the next meeting Feb. 6 with more definite timelines and details.
The board will hold a public hearing on a a marijuana moratorium ordinance at 7 p.m. Feb. 6.
Nomination papers for those seeking election to town offices are available. The election is from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, April 6. The business meeting will begin at 9 a.m. that day.
