KINGFIELD — Kingfield Elementary school has been selected to represent Franklin County during the WinterKids Winter Games.

One elementary school from each of Maine’s 16 counties will compete in the games, a four-week physical activity and nutrition challenge during January.

Each school can earn up to a total of 125 points for the successful completion of four weekly challenges:

• Physical activity: Students move a minimum of 300 minutes outdoors to earn 25 points.

• Nutrition: Students complete five healthy eating activities to earn 25 points.

• Family involvement: Students incorporate outdoor physical activities and nutrition at home to earn 25 points.

• Winter carnival: Students must participate in an outdoor celebration of winter activity to earn 25 points.

Schools can accrue 25 additional points for opening and closing ceremonies for 10 points, schoolwide participation for five points, collaborating with community healthy eating and active living organizations for five points, and school spirit for five points.

The rewards are $5,000 for the gold medal school, $3,000 for the silver medal school, and $1,500 for the bronze medal school. Schools that earn honorable mentions will have a school visit with a Maine Winter Olympian; winter equipment for the school, a value of $500; or a white-water raft sledding trip.

Each school will receive a WinterKids Winter Games Toolkit with:

• WinterKids Winter Games Playbook with rules and regulations, tracking sheets, weekly tips for success, checklist for teachers, local resources and calendar of events;

• WinterKids Guide to Outdoor Active Learning (GOAL) with customized Winter Games lessons;

• Healthy Foods, Healthy Bodies lesson kit and Guiding Stars nutrition fact sheets;

• Supplies and incentives with Winter Games classroom poster, snow paint water bottles, bracelets, Olympic torch, participation medals, healthy snacks, grocery gift cards, stickers, winter-themed books, nutrition fact sheets, and healthy living lesson materials; and 

• Media kit, including news release template, regional media list and how to submit a video.

Kingfield Elementary School has several events planned:

Family Wellness Night: 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Winter Carnival: 12:15 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Closing Ceremonies: 12:15 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26.
