LEWISTON — Lewiston/Oak Hill/Monmouth girls’ hockey coach Ron Dumont wasn’t sure what type of effort he was expecting after a big win over St. Dom’s in his teams’ previous outing.
Instead of a big-game hangover, the Blue Devils powered through yet another opponent, responding with a 7-2 victory over Falmouth at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Wednesday to improve to 10-0.
“Going in after the big St. Dom’s meeting, (I thought) we would come back flat,” Dumont said. “They are tired, but (Falmouth’s first goal) gave them a wake-up call. We weren’t as clean as we would have liked tonight, but sometimes you have to grind them out.”
Freshman Grace Dumond had a hat trick and an assist for the Blue Devils. She said she and her teammates wanted to make sure they didn’t let up after a rivalry game.
“It was a great team effort all a way around,” Dumond said. “It worked out in our favor.”
Dumond picked up her first goal of the evening when she lowered her shoulder at the right circle and powered her way to the net to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.
“It was a great pass, I just took it and took the opportunity, I didn’t see any other player open,” Dumond said. “I took it and went to the net, and it worked out really well.”
Falmouth’s goal by Kyla Gallap, who jammed home the puck in the crease from a Kayla Sarazin shot at the 12-minute mark, woke up the Blue Devils.
The next shift, Dumond notched her second goal, just 28 seconds later. Molly Chicoine stretched the lead to 3-1 with 1:07 remaining in the first period with Dumond picking up the lone helper.
“Lewiston we knew coming in they were a great team,” Falmouth coach Rob Carrier said. “We scrimmage them every year early in the preseason. We knew what they had and it would be an uphill battle right from the get go. We started off great and a couple of mistakes Lewiston took full advantage of. All the credit to them, they are really a talented team. We played well, but we didn’t have the same type of chances they had.”
In the second period, Lewiston went to work on the power play as they had a 46 second 5-on-3 man advantage. Dumond set herself at the top of the left circle all alone. Bri Dube fed her the puck and Dumond blasted the puck home for a 4-1 lead. Gemma Landry also picked up an assist.
Right after the second power play expired, Sara Robert stick handled her way past the Falmouth defense, she waited for an opening and shot the puck into a half open net. Dube had the only assist.
“She’s been playing really well too,” Dumont said. “She’s pretty nifty as you can see. Even though it isn’t officially a power play goal, it was a result of that situation.”
Jordan Mynahan stretched lead to 6-1 on the power play with 62 seconds remaining in the second period.
The Blue Devils were 2-for-4 with the extra attacker while Falmouth had no chances.
Madison Conley opened up the scoring early in the third period to give the Blue Devils a 7-1 advantage. Landry and Robert set the goal up.
Abi Lebel notched the Yachtsmen’s second goal at the 7:22 mark of the third period on an individual effort.
“Abi is a converted forward, it’s her senior year so she has a lot of experience,” Carrier said. “When she saw that open lane to be able get to the net to make that cut, to go across the the net, she took it.”
Camree St. Hilaire made six saves in the win while Julie Bonnvie stopped 18 shots.
