NORWAY — The Fire Department has begun the process of applying for $102,000 in grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters program, according to Chief Dennis Yates.
Assistant Chief Matt Buckley has taken the lead in writing the grant proposals for the FEMA assistance that would be used to replace protective clothing worn by firefighters, portable radios and pagers, Yates said.
The grants will take more than 100 volunteer hours to complete, Yates said.
The chief added that the department consistently pursues grant funding to help buy or replace equipment.
He said that five years ago, his son, Tim, also a firefighter in Norway, applied successfully for a $200,000 grant that helped the department replace its tanker truck.
“(Tim) did a good job then,” Yates said, “and Matt’s doing a great job now.”
