PORTLAND — An Auburn man was convicted Wednesday in federal court on a gun charge after a domestic violence conviction.

Willie Richard Minor, 58, was found guilty of possession of a firearm after having been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence after a two-day trial in U.S. District Court in Portland, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On June 14, 2010, Minor was convicted in state court of assaulting his wife, according to court records and trial evidence. As a result of that conviction, Minor was barred from having any firearms. On Nov. 27, 2016, in an interview with the Auburn Police Department, Minor admitted he had a gun and told police he kept it in his apartment. Police later searched his apartment after getting a warrant and found the gun Minor had described, U.S. Attorney Halsey B. Frank wrote in a news release.

He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He will be sentenced after the completion of a pre-sentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.

The investigation was conducted by the Auburn and Mechanic Falls police departments, the Maine State Police Crime Lab and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
