Lewiston features a favorable mixture of players in 2017-18.
They have proven talent — such as Class AA North first-teamer Victoria Harris — and experience — three of the five starters return, and several others saw significant action off the bench last season. For example, sophomores Maddy Foster and Cece Racine will take on larger roles this season.
“With our strong senior leadership, seasoned sophomores and freshmen who have played a lot of basketball, we have a lot of talent and hardworking young ladies,” fourth-year coach Lynn Girouard said.
The Blue Devils have height by way of Harris and fellow senior Gabrielle Wilson, and there’s also several ball-handlers.
Harris should be the team’s top scorer and rebounder again.
“She’s just a workhorse underneath the boards,” Girouard said.
Foster also can do some damage offensively. Girouard said that the three freshman on the varsity team — Jamyah and Myah Nicolas and Emily Strachan — like to score and aren’t afraid to attack the hoop.
“I’m hoping for big things from them,” Girouard said. “But they are freshmen, so they’ll make freshman mistakes. There’ll be some growing pains, I think. But they’re definitely quality basketball players.”
The Blue Devils hope their young players will mix in with the veterans and help them make further growth from last year’s 10-10 season.
“We hope to continue making notable strides in the direction of progress,” Girouard said.
