POLAND — Town Manager Matthew Garside announced at Tuesday night’s selectpersons meeting that the sale of Camp Connor is official, and the town now owns it. 

The town has been in the process of purchasing the camp from the Auburn-Lewiston YMCA for several months. The contract was finalized and signed last week. 

Poland still has one more payment to make next year, but “the deed is done,” Garside said.

The town is accepting donations of money or services toward the camp’s renovation.

At the Nov. 7 selectpersons meeting, Revision Energy made a presentation about the potential benefits of installing solar panels at the Town Office. 

Garside asked the selectpersons if they would be interested in Revision Energy coming back to the board and making a more detailed and specific presentation with pricing options, but the board was divided. 

Selectperson James Walker said he wasn’t interested in further exploring solar power for the town.

“I think we should look into hydropower. We have water sources right here and I don’t think we have enough sun here to make solar power worthwhile,” Walker said. 

Selectperson Janice Kimball also said she wasn’t interested, but it was because of concerns about the price and lifetime of the panels. 

Selectperson Mary-Beth Taylor was interested in hearing more from Revision Energy if there’s a chance it could save the town money.

The issue was tabled until the next meeting because Selectperson Walter Gallagher was absent and the board didn’t want to vote on it without him.

In other business, Garside said two contractors sent in bids on the Town Hall bathroom renovation project, one for $35,250 and the other for $71,400. 

The proposed project was to update the two downstairs bathrooms and to renovate the upstairs bathroom to be ADA-compliant. 

“I thought they were both way too high,” Garside said. He suggested they take a step back and re-evaluate the project. 

The board approved a motion to reject the two bids.

The board agreed that the downstairs and upstairs projects should be bid separately to see what the cost would be to do just one.

• Resident Louise Robinson was accepted onto the Scholarship Committee. She is the Poland school nurse and said she wants to get more involved to give back to the community.

• The Recreation Department is raffling two tickets for luxury box seats at an upcoming Celtics game, a prize worth $800.

• Chairperson Stan Tetenman also reminded the public that there are currently four vacancies on the Board of Appeals, one on the Planning Board, and one on the Library Trustees.

• On Saturday, Dec. 2, there will be a Breakfast with Santa from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed later in the day by the annual tree lighting at 6:15 p.m.
