FARMINGTON — A second man has been charged with arson in a fire that destroyed a bulldozer in Sandy River Plantation near Rangeley on Tuesday.
Fire investigators Thursday night charged Alexander Allan, 37, of Dallas Plantation, according to a statement released by the State Fire Marshal’s Office on Friday.
His roommate, Devon Clark, 18, of Rangeley, was charged Tuesday with Class A arson, authorities said. The charge carries a prison sentence of up to 30 years and a fine of up to $50,000.
The burned-out Caterpillar D-5 bulldozer was discovered in a swamp off Beech Hill Road by hunters Tuesday morning. Damage was estimated at $100,000, according to the statement.
The bulldozer is owned by Cousineau Inc. of Wilton, which owns the land and had brought the equipment to the site to repair a road on the property.
An excavator was taken from the work site and was damaged, but not by fire. The excavator was found a distance from where it had been parked, driven off to the side of a dirt road, according to authorities.
Investigator Kenneth MacMaster’s affidavit filed with the Farmington court earlier this week said evidence found at the scene led investigators to Clark.
“When interviewed, Clark confessed to his involvement and participation with the fire,” MacMaster wrote.
Franklin County deputies and the Maine Warden Service assisted in the investigation. Fire investigators said Friday that more arrests are likely.
