Mexico library fall raffle

MEXICO — The Mexico Public Library annual fall basket raffle is under way. Themes include Chocolate Fix, Fixin’ to Win (tools), Better for Boys, Great for Girls, Fall into Fall, Kitchen Collection, Art Supplies, Christmas Baking Fun, We Love Our Pets and Bath Time.

Tickets are available at one for $1, three for $2 or seven for $5 at the library. Winners will be drawn Friday, Nov. 17, and contacted by phone.

Proceeds benefit patron-centered improvements at the library.

Society to have final 2017 program

OTISFIELD — The Otisfield Historical Society’s final program of 2017 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Otisfield Community Hall. The main topic will be “William Spurr: Town Historian, Town Character.”

William Spurr, who died in 1977, was an Otisfield personality important in several ways, some of which society members will take turns discussing.

Following a brief business meeting, Celeste Hyer will summarize the long history of the Spurr family, who were one of the earliest and most important families in Otisfield.

She will also discuss Spurr’s will, which includes a clause leaving an unusual endowment to benefit any Otisfield baby given the middle name “Spurr.” Callie Zilinsky and Jean Pottle will recount some of the stories about Spurr as a town character. Jean Hankins will assess Spurr’s importance as town historian, most notably as the author of “The History of Otisfield.”

All are welcome to attend. The society plans to videotape the meeting and hopes those attending will add to the collection of information about one of the town’s most enigmatic figures. Refreshments will be served.

4-H Recognition Night

FARMINGTON — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Franklin County 4-H will hold its annual semi-formal recognition event from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at the Mt. Blue Learning Campus, 129 Seamon Road.

Award presentations honoring Franklin County 4-H members and volunteers for their achievements in 2017 will begin at 7 p.m. in the forum performance space.

Admission is free and open to the public.

OCEA-R to meet in Locke Mills

LOCKE MILLS — The Oxford County Educators Association-Retired will meet Friday, Nov. 17, at the Locke Mills Legion Hall. It will be the last meeting until March because of the “winter break.”

Sign-ins will start at 10:30 a.m., followed by a business meeting and a ham dinner served by members of the Legion Auxiliary. Winners of the annual scholarship raffle will be announced and a silent auction will be held after dinner.

Scholarship raffle donations cost $10. Anyone is interested in participating in the fundraiser should contact a member of the association for details.

The annual pie sale was a success. People gathered at the First Congregational Church in South Paris to peel apples and prepare pies. Many vehicles left the church with baked apple pies, frozen apple pies, apple pie mix and applesauce to be delivered.

Community center open house

PERU — The Peru Community Center will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, and there will be a Senior Citizens Craft Fair and Bake Sale.

The new library room and conference room will be open with free popcorn available.

There will be hot dogs on sale, and crafts by the kids’ program and Scout groups.

Vendors and crafters are welcome to rent a space for $10.
