Name: Michel A. Lajoie (Mike)

Occupation: Retired fire chief/ state legislator.

Education: Lewiston High School, studied at Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute in automotive technology, associate’s degree in fire science at Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute.

Family: Wife, Rita, three adult children, Denise, John and Rachel, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Political experience: Eight years as a state legislator representing district 71/58, part of Lewiston.

Questions

1. Why do you think you’re the most qualified, or best candidate for this seat?

I am a Lewiston native, born, brought up and educated in Lewiston/Auburn. I’ve owned and operated two small businesses in Lewiston, and I served 31 years as a firefighter, and the last 11 years as the fire chief. I also served as a state legislator for eight years, representing part of Lewiston. 

2. What do you believe is the biggest issue facing your city? Why?

I believe Mill No. 5 is probably the biggest issue. The redevelopment of Mill No. 5, in my opinion, is a key issue in the successful growth of the riverfront district. 

3. What do you like about the city budget passed this year, and what don’t you like?

I accept the current budget. I would have liked no tax increase, but that was not meant to be. During my career as the fire chief for Lewiston, I had the opportunity to work closely with city administration, the City Council and city staff. I found them to be dedicated in their task to generate an annual budget that was fair for both our citizens and businesses. I believe the current administration, City Council and staff did the same with this year’s budget.

4. What is the best way for your city to boost economic development and its attraction to people from outside the region?

Promote Lewiston in a positive manner, have confidence, and encourage our Lewiston Economic Development Department to continue their efforts in communicating and encouraging prospective businesses to visit Lewiston, and to potentially bring their businesses to Lewiston. We also have many amenities within Lewiston that will attract people. We have two hospitals, three colleges, excellent public safety services and public works. We also have the Gendron Franco Center, the Public Theatre, the L/A Museum, many fine restaurants, etc. 

5. Do you support the merger of Lewiston and Auburn?

No.
