GRAFTON TOWNSHIP — The nearly 10-acre woods fire off North Road near Silver Stream and Success Pond was fully contained as of Wednesday night, according to Newry Fire Chief Bruce Pierce.

Crews are working on the many hot spots in the center of the 8- to 10-acre blaze, he said.

“The reality is that these fires are going so deep into the ground because it’s been so dry,” he said.

Pierce said crews have used about 30,000 to 35,000 gallons of water, so far.

The fire started Monday afternoon and spread quickly because of wind speeds of up to 40 mph.

The Newry Fire Department and Maine Forest Service, along with volunteers from West Paris, will continue fighting the fire Thursday.
