BUCKFIELD — Whoever vandalized the soccer fields at Buckfield Junior-Senior High School over the weekend might not have anticipated the groundskeeprs’ quick work to repair them so they could be used the next day.
“Somebody late Saturday night, in the middle of the night, drove a couple of vehicles out (on the fields),” Principal George Reuter said. A soccer coach and the grounds crew first discovered the damage on Sunday, he said.
The crew went right to work repairing areas where tires tore up the grass.
“It took a couple of hours’ work to get it back in decent shape,” Reuter said. … “They were fixed up within the day and ready to use.
“Law enforcement came and checked it out,” he added.
Chief Deputy Hart Delay of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office confirmed his department is investigating the incident.
“We do have an idea of the type of vehicle that was used,” he said, adding it was either small passenger vehicles or maybe small trucks. “We’re going to be looking into a couple of leads that we have.”
Daley anticipates his office will have more information in the next day or two.
“The fields are nice but you can’t see them very easily from the street,” Reuter said. “So many people use these fields in a good way. We’d hate to try and restrict it with all the good things going on out there.”
