LEWISTON — A group of young Muslim women will speak next week about their experiences living in Maine.
The panel discussion will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College and will feature Lewiston High School students and recent graduates.
The panel is offered in conjunction with Life as a Muslim Girl in Maine: Thoughts, Stories, and Images, a Catherine Frost photo exhibit that was inspired by the 2017 Justice For Women Lecture.
That exhibit opened last month at Lewiston-Auburn College and will run through Nov. 9.
During the panel discussion, half a dozen speakers will talk about their lives as Muslim girls in Maine. They will also take questions from the audience.
A similar panel was presented in August in Portland, featuring students from Deering High School. During that discussion, audience members asked about hijabs – head scarves worn by many Muslim women – as well as who the young women viewed as role models and about their upbringing in Maine.
The panel discussion is free and open to the public.
Visitors browse “Life as a Muslim Girl in Maine: Thoughts, Stories, and Images,” a photo exhibit by Catherine Frost now at University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College. Next week, in conjunction with the photo exhibit, the college will host a panel discussion with young Muslim women living in Maine.
