FARMINGTON — A Rangeley man is scheduled to go to trial on charges of distribution of fentanyl in November at U.S. District Court in Bangor.

Steven Butler, 24, was indicted by a federal grand jury Sept. 14 on three felony counts of distribution of a controlled substance.

According to the indictment, Butler “knowingly and intentionally” distributed a mixture or substance containing fentanyl, an opioid-derived drug, three different times in Maine on about March 7, June 14 and June 28, according to US. District Court documents.

Butler pleaded not guilty to all three charges on Sept. 20.

On Sept. 26 a federal judge just set Butler’s bail at $5,000 unsecured bond with release conditions, which include submitting to supervision by the U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Office in Bangor and reporting there for supervision; no using alcohol; and not using or unlawfully possessing a narcotic drug or other controlled substances unless prescribed by a licensed medical practitioner.

A conviction on the drug charges is punishable by a maximum 20 years in prison, a $1 million fine or both. He also faces a minimum of three years of supervised release.

Jury selection is scheduled for Nov. 7.

Prosecuting the case is Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel B. Casey. Attorney Zachary Brandmeir is representing Butler.
