LEWISTON — A local man is recovering from abdominal injuries suffered in an early-morning shooting on Holland Street.

The man had been shot in the abdomen and was found in the roadway just before 1:30 a.m. Monday in the area of 164 Holland St., according to police.

Police are not releasing the man’s name until the incident is investigated further. The man is from the Lewiston-Auburn area, police said.

Officers started emergency medical care at the scene until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for his injuries, and is expected to survive.

Lewiston police and Maine State Police are investigating the incident. No arrest had been made.

Lt. David St. Pierre said it was unclear what precipitated the shooting or whether the man knew the person who shot him.

“He wasn’t in the best of condition to be speaking to detectives that time of night and due to his injuries,” St. Pierre said. “So I believe they’re going to be conducting some more interviews and we’ll hopefully get to the bottom of who did this or what happened.”

He urged people in the area to use caution and to report any suspicious activity to the police.

“At this point, we don’t have a suspect in custody, so it’s always a concern,” he said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Detective Thomas Murphy at 207-513-3001, extension 3352 or Maine State Police at 207-657-3030.
