SCARBOROUGH — Richard (Dick) Ray, 80, of Scarborough, formerly of Harpswell and Winthrop, died Wednesday morning, September 20, 2017 surrounded by loved ones at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a long period of failing health.

He was born in Lewiston on Jan. 19, 1937, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Floyd R. Ray of Auburn. Dick graduated in 1955 from Edward Little High School, attended Sullivan Preparatory School in Washington, D.C. and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from Husson College in Bangor. Dick also attended the University of Maine in Orono as an engineering student where he met his bride of 60 years the first night on campus, Deborah Getchell. They married on August 31, 1957.

Dick worked as a salesman throughout Maine before being hired by Carlton Snowe to run the Maine Uniframe Company, a division of Superior Concrete Co., Inc. In 1983 he purchased Superior Concrete. With the help of many valued hard-working employees he ran a very successful business until he was fortunate enough to retire at 52.

Dick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed following his children and grandchildren’s school and sports activities. Dick’s hobbies included lobstering, fishing, family activities and gatherings, and spending time up north with his hunting friends.

Dick and Debbie raised their family in Winthrop and have many fond memories with their Winthrop friends. They spent their later years in both Harpswell and Key Colony Beach, Florida.

Dick was predeceased by his parents, Floyd Richard Ray and Evelyn (Pottle) Ray.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie. Other survivors include brother John (Jack), his wife Elizabeth Ray and their family; son Richard (Rick) Jr, his wife Barbara and their three children, Chelsea Ray, Kristen (Ray) Evans and her husband, Tyler, and Cameron Ray; son Steve Ray, his wife Jayne and their three children, Eddie Ray, Stevie Ray and his wife, Bre, and Casey Ray; daughter Beth Ray Arsenault, her husband John and their twins Riley and Sydney Arsenault. Dick’s great-grandchildren include Maddie Ray and Ky Evans.
