AMVETS State Commander Jerry DeWitt receives the National State Commanders Award at the National Convention in Norfolk, Virginia, on Aug. 11. An employee of Tri-County Mental Health Services in Lewiston, he was recognized for his community service to veterans and military families in Maine. He is commander of Post 6 in New Gloucester. Maine AMVETS were applauded for providing close to $1 million in services to the Maine veterans’ community this past year. DeWitt accepted the award “on behalf of all those veterans who no longer have a voice.” The silhouette project started by Linda Lajoie of Gardiner was displayed at the national convention. The 22 life-size silhouettes depicted Maine veterans who have committed suicide.
