Native Plant Symposium Aug. 29
PARIS — The Garden Club Federation of Maine is sponsoring a Native Plant Symposium on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the McLaughlin Garden.
Lectures will cover plant identification, native plants in gardens, herbariums and preservation of natural areas. The all-day conference will include a tour of the McLaughlin Garden and an optional field trip to a private garden.
The fee is $20 for Garden Club Federation of Maine and McLaughlin Garden members. The public may register for $30. Lunch may be ordered for an additional $20 or attendees may bring their own.
The registration deadline is Saturday, Aug. 21.

‘Essentials of College Planning’ classes
PARIS — The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will host free workshops entitled “Essentials of College Planning” for adults 19 and older at the Western Maine University & Community College Center, 232 Main St.
Classes will be held at 10 a.m. and noon on Monday, Sept. 11; and at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25.

??Historical Society plans open house
JAY — Jay Historical Society’s annual open house that will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, which is the third Saturday this year, at the Holmes-Crafts Homestead on Jay Hill.
The theme will be World War I to commemorate the 100th anniversary.
The Society seeks World War I memorabilia, pictures and stories.

Nickel bingo at American Legion
DIXFIELD — The Dixfield American Legion will host nickel bingo from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Legion Hall.
The kitchen will be open to purchase food.
Culture of Compassion event
RUMFORD — Culture of Compassion 2017, “A Passion for People,” will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the ball field on the corner of Falmouth Street and Lincoln Avenue.
There will be groceries, a kids’ zone, bounce house, lunch, a health and dental fair, prizes, school supplies, gently used clothing, puppet performances, a dunk tank and a Fire Department simulation.
The event will be held rain or shine while supplies last. It is open to all citizens of the River Valley.
