LEE, N.H. — Former Oxford 250 winner Glen Luce took the lead from six-time series champion Johnny Clark at lap 111 and pulled away to earn his second Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North victory of 2017 on Friday night at Lee USA Speedway.
Luce, of Turner, finished second to two-time 250 winner Travis Benjamin the previous Sunday at Oxford. At Lee, it was Benjamin settling for runner-up honors. Garrett Hall, of Scarborough, led the first 60 laps and came home third, while Clark and 2016 champion DJ Shaw completed the top five.
Luce and crew chief Seth Holbrook are hitting their stride as the 250 rapidly approaches. Utilizing a new, state-of-the-art car he calls “Black Betty,” Luce has a legitimate shot to earn his second 250 title.
Luce started 14th on the 16-car grid and steadily worked his way into contention. Clark took over at mid-race and led the field until Luce and Benjamin took over the top spots.
Derek Griffith of Hudson, New Hampshire, spun early in the race while battling for the second position with Clark, yet still managed to rally back to sixth at the finish.
Finishing seventh through 10th in the PASS 150 were Derek Ramstrom, Dave Farrington Jr., Turner’s Ben Rowe and Jeremy Davis of Tamworth, New Hampshire.
Due to numerous cautions during Lee’s support class features, the PASS 150 did not see the green flag until 10 p.m. Friday evening. Fortunately, the pace was slowed by few cautions and was completed in just over 46 minutes. The PASS North Series has earned a reputation for running clean, fast races.
That was the final PASS North points race until the 44th annual Scott’s Recreation Oxford 250, presented by Fastway Trailer Products on Sunday, Aug. 27. PASS officials will release a detailed event schedule for the three-day spectacle in the coming days.
Soucy wins again at Oxford Dragway
The active youth movement in local drag racing continued on Friday night, as Greene’s Jaylee Soucy claimed the final in Daddy-O’s Jr. Dragster Series action. Soucy has been tearing it up all season, and this time she outgunned Josh Blais to earn the trophy.
Joe Brown outraced Steve Salo to claim the Nostalgia class final, while Russ Poland overpowered Al Lancaster in the Top ET division. Oxford Dragway has classes for all types of cars, and all of them saw plenty of action on Friday evening.
Salo notched a win in the Modified division, defeating Dan Brown in the final. A late program due to damp conditions and fluid on the racing surface prevented officials from getting to the finals in every class.
In Sleds and Bikes, three riders remained when the program ended. Cayden Childs, of Auburn, and brothers Tyler and Austin Romano, of Livermore, all earned points for getting to the semifinals.
Competition in the Street class ended in quarterfinals with seven drivers remaining, including Ben Desjardins, Al Graffam, Bryan Brownell, Don Seib, Russ Abbott, Patrick Godin and Corey Dill.
Erskine back on top at Wiscasset
Veteran Late Model racer Ben Erskine had the skills and proper equipment to win races for years. The easy-going truck driver (he hauls logs, lots of them) from Farmington endured a two-year drought at Wiscasset, but on Saturday night, that slump finally came to an end.
Erskine edged third-generation racer Ryan St. Clair by just 0.232 seconds to claim the 35-lap feature and get back to Victory Lane. Josh St. Clair finished a close third, while Sidney-based hotshoe Chris Thorne crossed the line in fourth. Brandon Bailey, of Woolwich, completed the Late Model top five.
Jimmy Childs has been on quite a roll in the Outlaw Mini class at Wiscasset. The veteran from Leeds almost had his third consecutive feature win on Saturday, yet thanks to a transponder mounted just off from its usual location, missed it by 0.033 seconds to winner and point leader Brent Roy.
Rob Greenleaf (Bath) filled out the podium in third, while Tim Collins (Farmingdale) and Jake Hendsbee (Whitefield) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. The win was Roy’s second of 2017.
Bryan Robbins notched his second Super Street victory of the season on Saturday evening. The veteran from Montville held off Tiger Colby (Newcastle) and Jonathon Emerson (Sabattus) for top honors, while Livermore’s Mike Haynes and Turner’s Glenn Reynolds rounded out the top five.
Allan Moeller completed the list of feature winners at Wiscasset on Saturday with his impressive effort in the NAPA Modified division. Moeller checked out on the field in the open-wheel ground pounders, beating runner-up Adam Chadbourne (Wiscasset) to the stripe by nearly two full seconds.
Mark Lucas, the 2016 MVRCA Maine Driver-of-the-Year, wheeled his No. 5 entry to a third-place finish, while Freeport’s Tom Young came home fourth. Nick Reno, of West Bath, was the final car to complete all 30 laps and finished fifth.
Moeller’s victory gave him the points lead and was a first since his title-winning season back in 2003.
