Afia Thompson of Bahiya Movement and poet and performance artist SevanKelee Boult (AKA Lucky 7), will conduct a workshop and performance at the Denmark Arts Center Saturday. 

DENMARK — Saturday, July 29, Denmark’s Arts Center welcomes Oakland, California artists Afia Thompson of Bahiya Movement and poet SevanKelee Boult for their impactful Jot and Jig Performance Workshop and evening performance, which integrates dance and poetry for creative expression. 
 
From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., a special workshop will guide and strengthen positive expression, open channels for community dialogue and suggest options for change and community growth.  This is an opportunity to express, feel, share, and allow words to move participants from paper into action. 
 
At 7 p.m., the community is invited to impactful performance art sure to enrich. This is an opportunity to welcome and honor awareness and diversity in our community. 
 
Bahiya Movement was founded in 2011 by the mother-daughter team of Afia and Nafi Thompson. Bahiya is a Swahili/Arabic word which means beautiful. Bahiya Movement’s mission is to create a safe, welcoming, body positive environment where everyone of all shapes, sizes, and genders are transformed into performing artists. 

SevanKelee Boult (AKA Lucky 7) is a well-known Bay Area poet and performance artist. This U.C. Berkeley graduate effortlessly blends music and poetry to engage the audience with her soft, raspy voice and mesmerizing stage presence. 

Her poem “Cucumber” has been seen on HBO Real Sex since 2000. She has represented several Bay Area slam teams over the past 15 years. In 2014, she became the only person in the Bay to win the honored title Grand Slam Champion of four different Bay Area Slam teams (SF, Berkeley, Oakland and Palo Alto). SevanKelee’s poem ?”Listening to Pain” was published in the Spring 2017 issue of Foglifter Journal.

Suggested donation for the evening performance is $10 to $15 to support the artists and the space and the day workshop suggested donation is $15 to $20. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
