In the June 29 Sun Journal, there was a very mean and misleading cartoon on the editorial page. The Affordable Care Act is not a train wreck or plane crash. It has made insurance available to many not previously insured. It would have been better if it weren’t for many who now want it repealed.
Republicans in Congress, particularly Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, made it clear from the beginning that he wanted President Obama to have no successes. He put his own biases ahead of the good of the country.
Insurance companies have tremendous lobbying influence and make millions from health insurance. They are now sabotaging the ACA, knowing Republicans will make things better for them.
Is the ACA perfect? No, but there is a tried and true solution — the Bismarck Plan. Otto Von Bismarck, German chancellor (1871-1890) developed it. He was an industrialist who wanted to ensure that Germany’s working class had good access to health care. The plan utilizes private insurance and health providers, similar to the ACA.
If members of Congress would study it and add its controls and perks to the ACA, the U.S. would have a lot better plan than the Republicans are putting forward. The Republican plans are nothing but protection for insurance companies and a tax cut for those who don’t need one.
I hope others will take the time to look up the Bismarck Plan and give it consideration.
