FREEPORT — Elizabeth A. Deschenes, 90, of Freeport and formerly of Lewiston, passed away Saturday, June 24, at the Hawthorne House in Freeport.

She was born in Bar Harbor on Sept. 24, 1926, a daughter of the late Eric and Elizabeth (Cushman) Berg. She attended schools in South Portland, graduating from South Portland High School and Gorham State Teachers College, where she met Joseph Deschenes, whom she married in 1949. They lived in Presque Isle, Springvale and Sanford, where Joe taught school, before moving to Lewiston, where he became superintendent of schools.

Betty taught school in Cape Elizabeth, raised her family of four children and then taught kindergarten in Lewiston for 16 years, which she truly loved. She moved to South Portland in 2000, after her husband passed away. Betty had been a member of the High Street Congregational Church in Auburn for 30 years, serving on the various boards and singing in the choir.

In South Portland, she transferred her membership to the First Congregational Church, where she became an active member and made many dear friends.

She is survived by three children, her daughter, Denise Campbell of Auburn, and her sons, Lance Deschenes of Saco and Dana Deschenes of Conway, N.H.; four grandchildren, Heather Goulette, Ian Campbell, Ananda Fenton and Miguale Nadeau; four great-grandchildren: Gabriel, Grace, Parker and Aislinn; and one sister: Nancy Craig of Cumberland Foreside.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; daughter, Lisa Nadeau; brother, Eric Berg; and sister, Lisa Myers.
