Glen Luce
Glen Luce of Turner powers off Turn 4 at Oxford earlier this season. The 2015 Oxford 250 winner from Turner dominated the 50-lap Super Late Model feature Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.

OXFORD — Longtime short track veteran and 2015 Oxford 250 winner Glen Luce took his rivals to school on Saturday evening, teaching them a lesson in humility as he went wire-to-wire in the 50-lap Super Late Model Trophy Dash at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Luce, of Turner, started on the pole after winning the first of three qualifying heats. As Luce was driving away from the field, points leader Alan Tardiff was wheeling his way up from 14th on the 21-car grid into contention.

He worked his way past reigning Oxford 250 champion Wayne Helliwell Jr. in the closing laps to claim runner-up honors and extend his lead in the championship standings. Helliwell settled for third, while 2002 Oxford 250 winner Scott Robbins and two-time track champion TJ Brackett finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Several guests showed up for Saturday’s SLM race, all preparing for the 44th annual Oxford 250 on August 27. Other notable finishers include Kelly Moore, of Scarborough (11th); Dave Farrington Jr., of Jay (12th); former 250 winner Jeremie Whorff, of Bath (15th); and Tracy Gordon, of Strong (16th).

Billy Childs Jr. added to his already comfortable points lead in the Street Stock class with his fourth overall and second consecutive feature victory of 2017. Childs drove around the outside of Lisbon’s Rick Spaulding to take over the lead with eight laps remaining. Spaulding settled for second, while Matt Dufault of Turner filled out the podium in third.

Livermore’s Tyler King and Bryce Mains of Bridgton completed the Street Stock top five. Other feature winners on Saturday at Oxford include Cam Childs, of Leeds (Bandits); Erik Hodgkins, of Minot (Figure 8); and Andy Hill, of Waterford, Vermont (in the visiting Northeast Classic Lites).

Lanpher continues hot streak at The Ridge

Ever since Manchester’s Reid Lanpher and crew chief Jason Rocker of Poland hit the track with their new Super Late Model in late April, things have really gone their way.

First, it was back-to-back wins on the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North circuit at Oxford and Beech Ridge, then it was weekly checkered flags at both Oxford and the Ridge as weekly racing began.

The 19-tear-old phenom added another impressive win on Saturday, beating Garrett Hall to the stripe by a mere .390 seconds to claim the Pro Series 125. Reigning class champion Curt Gerry led the first half until a broken track bar ended his run. Lanpher is the track’s first repeat winner of 2017.

The race featured battles for position throughout the field, one of the finest fans at Beech Ridge have witnessed in years. Westbrook’s John Peters had another strong effort in his Runtal Radiators Ford, rallying from 15th on the grid to claim third at the finish. Evan Beaulieu and Hall of Famer Mike Rowe finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Three cautions slowed the pace, none for serious incidents. The race was run in just over 46 minutes.

Adam Lovejoy drove to victory in the 25-lap Wildcat feature to complete the evening’s card.

Hinkley on top at Wiscasset

Nick Hinkley was declared the winner in Saturday’s Late Model feature at Wiscasset Speedway. The hometown favorite was awarded the victory after Chris Thorne’s machine failed post-race technical inspection.

It was Hinkley’s third win of 2017, adding to an already impressive season. Will Collins of Waldoboro crossed the stripe in third yet was awarded second, while Woolwich native Brandon Bailey took third. Liberty’s Ryan St. Clair came home fourth, while Tyler Robbins of Montville completed the top five.

In the evening’s Spotlight feature, Beech Ridge veteran Cole Watson notched his first points win at Wiscasset. Bryan Robbins finished a distant second, while young Sabattus hotshoe Jonathan Emerson filled out the podium in third. Emerson won his first feature on Memorial Day weekend in fine style.

Cory Hall of New Brunswick drove to victory in the 25-lap tilt for visiting NELCAR Legends teams. Hall is one of few drivers with the skills to beat Windham’s Austin Teras, who settled for second. Bobby Weymouth of Topsham crossed the stripe in third, while Kevin Girard and Casey Hall finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Zach Audet completed the evening’s feature winners at Wiscasset in the Outlaw Mini class. The veteran from Oakland finished a whopping two seconds ahead of runner-up Jake Hendsbee to claim his third victory of 2017. For Hendsbee, it was his first career podium finish in this class.

Point leader Brent Roy of Vassalboro helped his championship cause in third, while Augusta’s Shawn Kimball (fourth) and Tim Collins of Farmingdale (fifth) also had successful outings on Saturday at the mid-coast oval.

Theriault earns third ARCA win at Madison

Fort Kent native Austin Theriault continued his impressive season on the ARCA Racing Series, presented by Menards on Friday night, winning the Montgomery Ward 200 at Madison International Speedway in Wisconsin.

Theriault led the final 35 laps before posting his third victory of the 2017 season driving for Missouri-based Ken Schrader Racing. Theriault won the season opener in Daytona and claimed a thriller in Elko, Minnesota, on June 3.
