DEAR SUN SPOTS: Does the Poland Historical Society have any speakers lined up for this summer? What hours are they open?

— David, Auburn

ANSWER: According to Mary Chipman, who is the curator for the Historical Society’s “School House,” there are no speakers lined up for the summer. The society stopped planning those events some time ago.

But, if you’re looking for things to do in Poland, the Poland Spring Preservation Society has a packed calendar.

The Poland Spring Heritage Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 24, and features historic tours of the Historic Poland Spring Bottling Museum, the original springhouse and free tours of the Maine State Building. There is no cost to attend.

And, there is also a robust “Sunset Concert Series” that started this week. The remaining schedule is: June 26, Delta Knights Band; July 10, Anni Clark; July 17, Jim Gallant Band; July 24, Castlebay; July 31, Maine Highland Fiddlers; Aug. 7, Denny Breau Band; Aug. 14, Rabbi Sruli and Lisa; Aug. 21, Grassholes; and Aug. 28, Phil House and Kathy Haley.

All concerts start at 6:30 p.m. If the weather is good they are held outdoors at the gazebo at the Poland Spring Resort; otherwise, folks will be seated in the All Souls Chapel.

For more information about their events, call 207-998-4142.

The Resort also offers a packed schedule of summer events. For information, call 207-998-4351.

The Poland Historical Society building — known as the School House — at 1229 Maine Street in Poland is open Thursday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. from June through August.

And, if you’re interested in getting involved in the society, meetings are held the first Saturday of April, June, August and October at 9:30 a.m. at the School House. These business meetings are always followed by a program with guest speaker.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you so much for helping so many people. I enjoy reading all you print.

This is a thank you to the man who helped me on May 4 at Blackie’s in Auburn. I had sprained my ankle and was using a cane. He took  the time to explain the proper way to use the cane in a nice way, not making me feel bad.

He told me he was a physical therapist at Huber Associates.

It is so nice to live in an area where people take the time to help others. I hope everyone knows how blessed or lucky they are.

— No name, no town

ANSWER: Thank you for writing in. Sun Spots didn’t know there was a wrong way to use a cane, so you’ve done quite a lot to help people yourself!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m a retired Navy parachute rigger and would be interested in the parachutes Joyce has. She can contact me at 207-782-7845.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In reply to the person who has World War II parachutes, I make bags, etc., and would love to possibly purchase one of these.

It would make a great memory for those who served our country.

Please call 207-782-5553 or 207-224-7487.
