JAY — A 10-year-old boy was injured Wednesday afternoon when he drove his bike from a residence on upper Elm Street into traffic and was struck by an SUV, Livermore Falls Lt. Joseph Sage said Thursday.

Griffin Hewins of Jay was taken by a NorthStar EMS ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington with injuries that were not life-threatening, Sage said.

Hewins was released from the hospital after being treated, he said.

Sylvie Fournier, 60, of Jay, had been driving west on a flat section of the road toward Main Street when the boy rode into traffic. Elm Street is steep in some areas.

The bike broke in half and got stuck under the 2008 Toyota SUV. Hewins was thrown from the bicycle where he was injured, Sage said.

Fournier was not injured in the accident, which was reported at 3:57 p.m.  There are no charges.

The section of road was closed for about an hour while an investigation was conducted.

Jay police secured the scene. An officer on the Jay Police Department who was on duty was related to the driver, so Livermore Falls Police Department was asked to handle the accident.

The Jay Fire RescueDepartment responded to assist at the scene.
