This week’s poem by Eric Dibner of Casco beautifully explores both a body of water and a speaker’s evolving state of mind as he interacts with the beloved lake over two days
Sandy Beach, Otisfield
By Eric Dibner
Sunday, after the weekend’s rain
The beach sand is drop-speckled,
The swamp reaches under the logs.
In the clear warm evening,
The sun down, the west’s peach covers
The gentle lake, calm, lapping.
A cool swim is cleansing.
I watch the tree-reflecting ripples,
Hearing high and low crickets,
A big frog cricking casually back in the swamp,
Ducks talking while preening out by the raft.
Little fish leap, splash among the bubble weeds.
Clouds of gnats float.
A bat comes in low to say hi in the dimming light.
Next evening, two ducks on the beach,
The younger one friendly.
Over pine horizon, young moon in haze.
The lake flattening.
Dragon flies.
Two sandpipers land on the shore,
Chat shrill and pretty: poo-pi-peep!
Then fly off just over the water
