LEWISTON — The YWCA Central Maine has announced that it has established the Barbara Varney Randall Endowment Fund. Barbara Randall, a well-known Lewiston native, died at the age of 89 on Nov. 22, 2015.

Randall was a Lewiston High School graduate and a 1946 graduate of Bates College, with a degree in sociology. She later received her masters degree from the University of Maine in 1960. Randall served as the dean of women at Bates College before taking a teaching position in the English Department at Edward Little High School, where she taught until her retirement.

Randall was an active participant in many local organizations and, according to Thomas Peters,II, Esq. she left a legacy of $326,370 to nine local organizations, including the YWCA Central Maine where she was an active member and served on its board of directors.

“We are pleased to be a recipient of Ms. Randall’s estate. An endowment fund has been established in her name that will be held in perpetuity and serve as a lasting legacy to her contributions to the community and especially to the YWCA Central Maine,” said Kathy Durgin-Leighton, executive director, YWCA, upon accepting the funds.

Other organizations remembered by Randall include the Auburn Public Library, the Lewiston Public Library, the Women’s Literary Union, Public Theatre, Community Little Theatre, Bates College, LA Arts, and Washburn-Norlands.
