DURHAM — Malcolm A. Libby, of Durham, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, June 3, following a long, courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on April 28, 1964, in Lewiston, the youngest of 12 children, to Arlene Jennis Brown and James Bartlett Libby. He was a graduate of Freeport High School.
Mac’s work consisted of carpentry, guitar manufacturing, and various positions with Sabre Yachts, Thos Moser Cabinetmakers, Hammond Lumber, the Dingley Press and Motostar Tire.
As a young man, Mac worked with his father in the family business, the Pine Plank Shop, learning the woodworking craft that would serve him through his adult life, as he took great pride in creating tables, bookshelves, birdhouses, and many other wooden novelties, including his pig planters, for his family and friends.
A skilled gardener, Mac enjoyed planning and planting his vegetable garden each year. He built and maintained a greenhouse that allowed him to start his seeds in late winter for an early start on the growing season, yielding thriving plants and blossoms and plentiful vegetables that he generously shared with his family and friends.
Mac loved his large family and reminisced and laughed often with them, telling stories of their youth, fun times, and lessons of the values instilled by their parents. He enjoyed playful, friendly, and good humored teasing of his many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He enjoyed the holidays with his family, particularly Christmas, as he’d go all out in decorating the exterior of the family home. As his parents aged, Mac ensured their comfort, safety, and loving care. In subsequent years, he continued his care of the family home, including feeding and watching his Mom’s backyard birds and her beloved white squirrel.
Mac’s 1973 Pontiac Lemans was his pride and joy for the past 25-plus years. He loved his motorcycle rides to visit his friends and talk about their escapades and adventures, as well as his rides to the mountains of western Maine and the ocean at Land’s End, Bailey Island. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and listening to classic rock.
Mac will be lovingly remembered by his five sisters, Brenda Heath of Lisbon Falls, Sherry DeBiasio and her husband, Ernest of Topsham, Patricia Dewitt and her husband, Roy, Pamela Lussier, Theresa Soucie and her husband, Mark, all of Durham; six brothers, Robert, Maynard and his wife, Joyce, Kenneth, and Stephen, all of Durham, Richard of Brunswick, and Brian of Westbrook; his numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends; and his best friend, Art Burhoe, who has been a lifelong friend.
Mac was predeceased by his parents.
