BELFAST (AP) — A 71-year-old man has died after Maine police used a stun gun in an attempt to immobilize him.

Belfast police responded to the home of Dennis Ward on Saturday after they say Ward fired a gun multiple times in his house. Belfast’s chief of police says Ward fired the gun into the ground with officers present and refused orders to drop the gun.

One of the two responding officers used his stun gun to subdue Ward. The other officer fired his gun twice in Ward’s direction, but missed.

Ward was taken to a local hospital and died two hours later from medical complications.

The Maine attorney general’s office will conduct an investigation.
